Every so often someone messages us asking the same question: is a Yorkshire Terrier actually right for my home? It’s a fair question, and after years of sharing our life with Hania, Stach and Oxana — plus a few rare-coloured Yorkies along the way, from chocolate to silver to biewer — we thought it was time to answer it honestly, not with a sales pitch, just with what we’ve actually learned living alongside these tiny, big-personality dogs. 🐾
Big Personality, Tiny Package
Yorkshire Terriers were bred as working terriers, and you can still see it in them today. Ours are feisty, curious, and endlessly affectionate — they treat every visitor like a new best friend, but they’re not shy about telling you when something isn’t right either. If you want a quiet, background dog, a Yorkie probably isn’t it. If you want a dog with real character packed into a few pounds, that’s exactly what you’ll get.
The Grooming Commitment
This is the part people underestimate the most. A Yorkie’s coat grows continuously, much like human hair, and it needs real, regular attention — brushing several times a week at minimum, baths every couple of weeks, and a trim every six to eight weeks if you’re not growing it out long. We groom ours regularly at home between professional appointments, and honestly, it becomes part of your routine rather than a chore once you settle into it. But it’s worth being honest with yourself before bringing one home: if daily or near-daily coat care isn’t realistic for your lifestyle, that’s important to know upfront.
Energy, Exercise and Everyday Life
Don’t let the size fool you — Yorkies are active little dogs who need proper walks and mental stimulation, not just a lap to sit on. That said, their small size does make them a genuinely good fit for flats and smaller homes, as long as you’re committed to giving them daily exercise and something to think about. Ours get restless and a little mischievous if a day goes by without enough stimulation — a bored Yorkie will absolutely find their own entertainment, usually not the kind you’d have planned.
Family Life — Kids and Other Pets
Yorkies are typically great with children, playful and easygoing by nature, but their small size is something to take seriously. At just a few pounds, they can be injured surprisingly easily during rough play, so this is a breed that does best with children who’ve been taught how to handle a small dog gently, and with adult supervision for younger kids. With other dogs, ours have generally settled in well, though as with any dog, introductions matter and every personality is different.
Health and Everyday Care
Like most small breeds, Yorkies can be prone to certain health considerations worth knowing about in advance — dental health in particular needs consistent attention as they get older, and their small size means they can also feel the cold more than bigger breeds (yes, ours do wear jumpers in winter, and no, we’re not sorry about it). Regular vet checks, a stable routine, and a bit of extra care go a long way with this breed.
Is Your Home Ready?
Before bringing a Yorkshire Terrier into your life, it’s worth being honest with yourself about a few things:
- You can commit to regular grooming, not just occasionally
- You have time for daily walks and mental stimulation, not just a “sometimes” routine
- You can supervise interactions with young children
- You’re prepared for a dog with a genuine, sometimes stubborn personality
- You can provide warmth and comfort during colder months
- You’re ready for a companion who will absolutely make their opinions known
