A New Beginning – How Max Became My First Yorkshire Terrier in the UK

Max, my first Yorkshire Terrier, at home in the UK
Max

This is the story of how Max became my first Yorkshire Terrier here in the UK.

Coming to the UK was one of the hardest chapters of my life. I had already said goodbye to Ivo, and for a long time I did not think I had the strength to open my heart to another dog. There was a quiet, empty space at home that nothing else seemed to fill.

Finding My First Yorkshire Terrier

We were renting back then, and every decision came with its own limits. I secretly dreamed of a little girl Yorkshire Terrier, but with our budget as it was, a boy was simply what we could bring home. So in 2018, we drove to another town to meet him.

Life With Max

I will never forget how happy we were on that drive home. He was tiny, bold, with a graphite muzzle and warm cappuccino tones, and completely unbothered by the world around him. We named him Max, and within days he had completely conquered our hearts, including our older son’s. To this day, whenever our son is home, Max barely leaves his side.

Bringing Max home did not erase the ache I still carried for Ivo, and it never will. But it taught me something I did not expect: love for one dog does not close the door on loving another. Max simply opened a new chapter, one I had been too afraid to start.

When Max was about a year old, he became seriously ill, and for a while I was terrified we might lose him. Thankfully, with a lot of care and a good vet by our side, he pulled through completely, and watching him bounce back taught me just how resilient these little dogs can be.

As a first-time Yorkshire Terrier owner, I had a lot to learn, and Max taught me most of it. Morning walks became part of our routine, along with regular brushing to keep his coat soft and tangle-free. Every small ritual, from breakfast to bedtime, slowly turned our house into a home that finally felt complete again.

Max carries himself like he was born for the show ring rather than a living room in Scunthorpe. He does not simply walk, he floats. He is loud and fiercely loyal, wary of strangers and especially cautious around children, so I always keep a close eye when little visitors are around. Being left alone is his least favourite thing in the world, and he is not shy about letting the whole street know it 🐾

Not long after, our girl Tosia joined the family too, but that is a story for another post.

Having a dog while renting came with its own extra costs, and it was not always simple to manage. But looking back, every bit of it was worth it, because everything about Colourful Yorkies Life started with him.

Looking back now, I can see how much that decision shaped everything that came after. Max was never meant to be just one dog in a quiet house; he turned out to be the beginning of a whole new chapter for our family. Every walk, every grooming session, every quiet evening with him taught me something about patience and love that I carried into welcoming each of our other Yorkshire Terriers over the years.

If you would like to read more about how this whole journey began, you can find the earlier chapters here and here.
